Democracy in schools


Practise democracy, basic rules, procedures, ways of thinking.
Pupils in primary schools, youth council. Work with Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina to develop models for school and youth democracy.

  


Ensure available knowledge about children and young people's wishes and needs forms the basis for priorities and initiatives, both in Norway and other countries.
The whole municipality has a responsibility to safeguard children and young people's rights and needs (The municipality plan 2007 to 2020)

Each year a selected theme is picked for the children and Youth Council, and a preparation booklet is distributed to all pupils in the primary schools as a working basis to discuss issues. Distribution of Sandnes City Council’s NOK60.000 mutual funds. Distribution of NOK100.000 to many small actions and one larger action. All Children and Youth City Council representatives have an opportunity to ask questions directly to the mayor.

 
Departement of Leisure is responsible for organizing / and implementation of the Children and Youth City Council. A working group with representatives from various departments is involved in this work. Sandnes Healthy City is responsible for the democracy project and the cooperation with Croatia. The foundation “Sandnes Dubrovnik” and the Healthy Cities work in connection with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

  

Preparations at schools. Implementation of the Children and Youth City Council in November. Implementation of immediate measures for each school in the spring. Representatives from the youth council visit Labin in Croatia. Representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina visit the Children and Youth City Council.

  

All proposed measures that students suggest are reviewed and economically evaluated by individual departments. The Children’s City and Youth Council distributes NOK100.000 to immediate measures that are implemented within the school year. The protocol is sent to all departments for follow-up. In Croatia, it is now mandatory with a student’s council in High Schools, based on the Norwegian model, and many cities have started with youth city council modeled from the Children and Youth City Council in Sandnes. In Bosnia and Herzegovina 4 municipalities established Youth City Council, while 5 new are coming up in 2010
