Cycling city

Increase bicycle use in Sandnes
  • Less pollution
  • Better health and well-being
  • Strengthen Sandnes profile as a bycicle City

The purpose of this project is to promote Sandnes as one of the two cycling towns in Norway - by promoting the use of bicycles as the preferred transportation for as many as possible of the municipality's residents, and reduce motor vehicle traffic.

For the last 12 years, many actions that naturally fall under the concept of Bicycle City Sandnes, have been put to life. The goal is always to encourage increased use of bicycles - by improving conditions for cyclists.

”The bycycle City” is organized into a steering committee and a working group. Involved are representatives from the city council, businesses, the Public Roads Administration and the local bike club.

  • Planning and construction of a main network of bike paths
  • Design of cycling maps of Sandnes and the region
  • Campaigns for expanded use of bicycles
  • Free bikes system
  • Opening of "green cycling route"
  • Distribute our own bike magazine
  • Bike guiding

About 70 km new bike lanes are built. Bicycle racks for approx. 400 bikes are set up. Sandnes was the first city in Norway to offer bikes for free use in 1996. A bike with electronic locking system was specially designed, and now 100 city bicycles are located in 16 stands throughout the city center. Bicycle allowance are introduced to the council's employees for cycling to work
